The Housing Organization Helping You and Your Community

Meeting the demand for affordable housing for low-income residents and families is vital within our communities and can sometimes be a challenging undertaking; this is where nonprofit programs such as Habitat for Humanity step in to help.
Habitat for Humanity was established in 1976 as the Koinonia’s Partnership Housing Program with the intent of building and providing shelter for those in need. This program was the first establishment of this type of housing assistance, where beneficiaries of the home to be built would work side-by-side with volunteers to the organization to build the house. Funds to pay for the home build would come from no-interest loans provided by the organization’s “Fund for Humanity,” which was strengthened by fundraising and supporter donations. Today, this organization helps build homes and strengthen nearly 1,400 communities in the United States, and 70 countries around the World.
During its work, Habitat for Humanity found that affordable housing needs are prevalent wherever they go throughout the World. While low-income and poverty situations take different shapes in different communities, everyone’s housing needs stay the same; families and children need stable, safe, and clean housing in order to lead productive and healthy lives.
The organization notes that housing problems will affect almost half of the American adult population at one point in their lives. It’s further reported by Habitat for Humanity that a striking majority of the US population find it difficult to secure affordable housing within their communities, and have had to make difficult decisions and budget cuts to afford mortgage or rent payments. Habitat for Humanity seeks to combat this issue so that families can live strong, healthy lives and not have to actively choose between necessities and affording shelter. Some ways that the organization helps are:
- Building new construction
- Offering loans for building and repairs
- Advocating for law improvements
- Assisting in disaster recovery and prevention
- Providing repairs needed to homes
By Habitat for Humanity and its volunteers providing the services listed above, residents and their families can experience an improvement in their daily lives in some of the following ways:
- Residents are given a chance to improve financial stability and start saving since an affordable mortgage was introduced.
- Families can spend more stress-free time together.
- Children can thrive in a clean and safe environment.
- Recipients of Habitat for Humanity homes report that they have experienced a positive increase in overall health.
For those interested in applying for a home through Habitat for Humanity, they’ll need to prepare for a very involved but equally worthwhile process. The organization explains that the process they’ve put in place for homeownership helps properly prepare families by teaching about finances, maintenance, mortgages, and more; this helps to ensure long-term success.
While there are income limitations, there are other qualifications that Habitat for Humanity requires of prospective recipients:
- Recipients must show the ability and willingness to handle a mortgage on a home. This step can be especially important since the mortgage paid will go to help other future program beneficiaries.
- Applicants to the program will need to be able to show why they require assistance in obtaining decent housing for themselves and their families. The qualifications for approval will vary based on the community the applicant resides in.
- Participants will need to be able to perform what’s called “sweat equity” in the building of their home and in participating in the construction of other’s homes. Taking educational classes on homeownership or performing other volunteer work can also be included in this step.
