Returning to School Later in Life

Returning to School Later in Life

For many of us, the thought of going to back to school when we are older makes us anxious. We may tell ourselves that we’re too old or no one will hire someone my age. Maybe you’ve spent most your adult life raising children – you are longing for something new. Or perhaps you are losing out on opportunities because you don’t have a college degree.

Even though you may be older, your life experiences can be a tremendous help as you pursue higher education. In some cases, you may even be able to get credit for them if you pursue a college degree. While getting a higher education may not be for everyone, there are so many reasons why returning to school later in life can be good for you.

Looking for your next adventure

As we go through life, our needs and wants change. Many people who return to school when they are older do so after investing 20 to 30 years of their life in another career. While this might seem like a waste to some, many times the investment we’ve made in our first career is setting us up to do something even better the second time around.

Perhaps we have a deep desire to pursue something that carries more meaning. Or, we are coming to the realization that what we are doing just isn’t making us happy. After all, if you are spending 40 hours of your week doing something that you don’t love, what’s the point? If you feel your desk job just isn’t putting you in the position to change the world, pursue your next adventure by returning to school.

Stay Competitive

Returning to school can keep you competitive in the current workforce. If you don’t already have a college degree, pursuing an Associates or Bachelor’s degree can get you more in line with your peers. Or perhaps you are looking to move up? A Master’s degree may open the doors of opportunity for you.

If you work in an industry that is rapidly changing or becoming more specialized, you may find a degree or certificate will be helpful for your future. Not only can it give you an advantage over your competition, but you will also learn more about the field that you are currently in. This increases your value as an employee and keeps you up-to-date.

See a Bigger Picture

For younger students, getting a college degree may be more about checking off the classes as you need to take and joining community groups to build up your resume. To many, it’s just the next step you take after you graduate high school.

Youth can make it harder to see it everything fits together. With life experience, you have a better idea as to how your decisions and viewpoint can have an impact. Attending class becomes more meaningful to you. It becomes more about learning something new and growing as a person, not just passing the time.

Accomplishment

For many of us, getting a college degree may be our life-long dream. Finances or family obligations may have prevented you from pursuing higher education. Or perhaps you’ve tried a few times, but just couldn’t finish. Whatever stood in your way before doesn’t have to be a barrier now. The satisfaction of setting a goal and reaching it can do wonders for us. Getting a college degree is a great accomplishment that you can do at any point in your life.

What’s Holding You Back?

The bottom line is this – you are going to get older, no matter what you do. Age is only a deterrent when we allow it to be one. Going back to school later in life can be an incredibly rewarding experience. You can learn new things and continue to grow as a person. Whether you are looking to change careers or create one, education can open doors for you, regardless of your age.
