Clubs and Extracurriculars to Join in College

You’ve got the scholastic part of College down pat. Classes are breezing by, you’ve found a great workspace and routine to be successful in classes, and now you are looking to heighten your college experience from a more social aspect. Fortunate for you, most colleges are brimming with social opportunities in the way of clubs and extracurriculars you can join. Here are some tips for finding great college activities and groups to get involved in and enjoy.

Get Online

Many colleges will list different extracurriculars, clubs, and organizations they have on campus to make it easier for students to get involved. Take this opportunity to search for clubs of interest and research each one that stands out individually to see what kind of info you can gather. Search social media for programs at your college as well. Many students will talk openly about the clubs and activities they are involved in, and one or more of these may catch your eye. Most clubs are always looking to grow their membership and their influence, so they should be happy to hear from you.

Look Around Campus

Many clubs will depend on old school flyers posted on poles and boards around the school to spread the word about their group. Pay attention to the signs and even better, if you see the person posting the sign that interests you, strike up a conversation and ask questions about the club. More than likely, they will be thrilled to talk about the club and what they love about it. If they are willing to spend their time hanging flyers, it is likely they enjoy their group enough to talk to you about it too.

Don't Narrow Your Search

Don’t narrow your search to social clubs only. There are volunteer organizations and nonprofits that not only need your help, but you could probably use theirs as well. Doing something to give back to your community or world as a whole can boost parts of your spirit and psyche that you didn’t even know needed boosting. There is nothing like helping and feeling that your contribution is needed and wanted. This is also a great way to make friends who also have loving hearts and share interests, passions, and goals with you. Create lifelong friendships, help others in need, and have fun doing it? A win all around!

Think Of Your Future

Look for groups and clubs that are affiliated with your eventually blossoming career. Search out groups that will grow your experience and put you in contact with others who are moving in the same or similar fields as you. Landing a great job has a lot to do with who you know and where you network. So start early- start networking with others who will also be professionals in your field to get a jump on important relationships you can build with this in mind. And if you find yourself in a position where you may need to hire, you may already know some great candidates to bring in to the fold. You can also further your experience by interning and/or volunteering in your field to grow your resume before even graduating college. Many students wait until after graduation to get any experience under their belts, but this can cost you. Many companies are looking for education AND experience, making it hard for recent grads. Jump ahead of the pack and see yourself getting hired quicker and with better prospects.

Whatever your flavor, there is likely a club or group for you. The trick is to get out there and explore your options and be open to new opportunities and meeting new people. You may be surprised by the matches you find when you head out with a great attitude!
