9 Signs You’re Ready for a Career Change

We invest large amounts of energy and spend a lot of time at work. Because of this, it’s vital that we are happy with our careers.
Happiness with your job can directly impact your health. If you’re in an environment that at the end of the day causes you to feel stressed out and anxious, it may be time to look at making a change. Consider these 9 signs you’re ready for a career change.
1. You Don’t Feel Valued
It’s essential to feel that the work you do is important and makes a difference to your company. Before you consider a career change based on not feeling valued, look at what may be causing this feeling. Sometimes it can be something like poor management and not the company or job itself. Don’t ignore it when you feel this way, however. It’s important to feel self-worth.
2. There is No Room for Growth
At times in companies or careers, growth can become stagnant. If you think there is no possibility of moving up or forward with your career, it may be time to consider a change. Before making a decision, however, make sure your lack of growth isn’t due to something you may be able to change or improve on.
3. You Never Get the Raise You’ve Worked For
If you have put in the necessary work for a raise, and continue to be passed up, you may not be valued enough with your employer. If you feel you’ve earned the opportunity for more money, speak with HR or your manager to see if there is a resolution. If your pay is still not raised to accommodate what you feel you deserve, you may want to look elsewhere for a job.
4. You No Longer Care
Perhaps your career is no longer igniting the same feelings of excitement or passion that you once felt. It could be that your priorities or interests have changed, and you need to reassess what matters to you and if a career change is in the cards.
5. You Don’t Feel Pride When People Ask About Your Job
If you feel yourself grimacing or hesitating when people ask about your job, this could indicate a problem. Evaluate what’s making you feel this way. It could be the company you’re working for or the type of work you’re doing that’s inciting those feelings.
6. Toxic Work Culture
If you feel your coworkers or management are unreliable or untrustworthy, there are excessive amounts of gossip, or you generally feel a lack of support, you may be working in an unhealthy environment and want to consider a career change.
7. You Always Complain
Venting about work problems is entirely reasonable in small doses. However, if you find your distaste for work is consuming most of your conversations these days, or you can’t find anything positive to say, this can be a significant indicator that you need to do something different.
8. You Don’t Feel Healthy
If your body isn’t feeling up to par lately, pay attention. High levels of stress, anxiety, and general unhappiness with your work can have a physical impact on you. Watch for severe feelings of exhaustion, headaches, body aches, and difficulty sleeping. While these can be related to other health problems and you should always consult with your doctor, they can also be warning signs that malcontent with your work is having some adverse side effects.
9. You Often Think of Alternatives
If you find yourself repeatedly thinking about other things or jobs you could be doing besides what you’re doing currently, it could be an indicator that you aren’t fulfilled. The reality of a career change may need to be considered.
